International workshop on Maritime Spatial Planning in Slovenia

Participants discussed how to apply maritime spatial planning in small sea spaces. Specific challenges emerge in small sea areas: high concentration of uses, intense land-sea interactions, limited availability of free space and the need for transboundary cooperation (among countries and among regions within a country).

The case of Slovenian can be highlighted as an example of good practice of a proactive approach in planning sustainable development in the area of ​​the North Adriatic, given the diversity of sea and coast in such areas and given the diversity of existing practices and activities that are present in the sea and coastal areas.In view of the characteristics of the area under consideration, special attention must be paid to the relations between the sea, the coast and the hinterland, as well as the understanding of spatial problems in the wider regional context. When developing those activities at sea and in the coastal strip in the future, the environmental quality will be taken into account, paying special attention to the increased quality of use of the sea and the coast for all stakeholders.

Slovenian EUSAIR Facility Point project partner supporting the work of the EUSAIR Thematic Steering Group 3 highlighted the alignment between the two areas and offered support and wilingness to cooperate in future developments.

The workshop is aimed at national MSP authorities, representatives of sub-national authorities, planners and other experts dealing with MSP in small sea spaces.

The experience from the workshop, together with the Maritime Spatial Planning Directive which seeks to establish cooperation between different stakeholders and ensuring the conditions for the sustainable development of the sea and the coast will help in the preparation of the Maritime spatial plan that Slovenia is planning to adopt by 2021.
